Actor ruminations- Auditions

I’ve been given an early Christmas present by landing a few auditions. At first I was insanely nervous and went through the whole insecure actor cycle…Mine goes like this…Sweet! I got an audition. Followed by I want to impress them what if I don’t? What if I’m not pretty or skinny enough? What if my whole life has been a lie and I should be working as a secretary? I should probably just hope to marry rich and become a plastic stepford wife. Stressful right? I think these voices were particularly loud because I hadn’t had an audition in a while or in Chicago. The work I booked in LA was from people seeing work I had already done and casting me from that. It was kind of awesome. But with a whole new city (and one with lots of theater) Auditions are necessary.

I quieted the voices by reminding myself that auditions are simply another opportunity to perform, to have fun doing what I love, and explore new characters. I also remind myself that I am my harshest critic. When the nerves and neurosis run rampant I focus on the work. Researching new characters, exploring my monologue, revisiting the characters in my monologue. And when all else fails..SHAKE WHAT YOUR MOMMA GAVE YA!

My audition tonight is for Superhero Burlesque Show so I’m pretty giddy. I love comic/ graphic novels and burlesque. Comic book characters are so well written, complex and fun. There is so much freedom in exploring a super hero (or my favorite, a super villan ). My Saturday and Sunday nights were spent watching old Batman clips and Burlesque dancers. If you were a fly on my wall (I’d charge admission) you’d see me doing my best Harley Quinn while trying to get my flannel PJ pants off in a sexy manner underscored with Christina Aguilera. Sure as hell beats worrying about reports and the stock market. My acting coach Kate McGregor Stewart gave the great advice to dedicate each audition to someone or something.

I’m dedicating my audition to my uber talented BF’s Zee . Zee and I have had many a drunken dance party and she has taught me to be proud and embrace my curves.

Hipster Shore

Hipster Shore – watch more funny videos

I have a love/hate relationship with two things in life…Hipsters and Guido’s. I went to Hofstra University which was filled with look alikes of the entire cast of Jersey Shore. The girls wore skirts and heels to class in the winter and were tan year round. Guys took longer to get ready than I did and wore more jewelery. It was a fascinating culture shock for me! As an actor I’m supposed to abhor reality TV. I admit that its totally trashy and a train wreck.But I can’t look away! I hate myself for watching but, its freaking entertaining!Cabs ah here!

Which brings me to my next complicated relationship…Hipsters. I will admit my ex-boyfriend is a hipster but,to be fair when we dated he was Emo. I miss the simple days of Dashboard Confessional and Bright Eyes.Sigh.I will also admit that hipsters and I sometime like the same bands,movies,books and bars. By High Fidelity standards we should be a perfect pair! But their stench of pretension, PBR and rich kid aloofness turns me off. I do love that they are a walking parody of themselves. I love the hipsters and Jersey Shore for giving me something to make fun of. They make me feel much better about myself. Big props to Ronnie and Sammi for making me feel much better about the state of my love life.They are the freakin poster children for anti monogamy (is that a thing? I making up words,sue me its 1am)

I love this Funny or Die Video called Hipster Shore. If there is another episode or season of this show…I want on!!

I found this entry by another wordpress user via Facebook. It was really touching. Its nice to hear of a mother standing up for her sons individuality. Weather he is gay or straight she is giving him the freedom and support to be who he wants. Amen to that! In my mind that is what Christianity is about.LOVE and not hate and exclusion.

You want to know where kids learn to bully other kids? Not TV,not movies but parents. If parents are ignorant and hateful its passed right on to their kids. If all parents could teach tolerance and acceptance like the mother in the blog the world would be a much better place!!

The blog got me thinking about the Trevor Project (It gets better) in response to the gay bullying and teen suicides.Its not a fun subject but it is something that I am deeply passionate about. I’m not gay.But,I love them all and don’t understand how others remain in fear and ignorance about them. It is baffling!

I do know that it gets better. I was bullied severely in grade school. Girls excluded me and boys barked at me and called me a dog. The list of terrible things goes on.I don’t know why I was a target. But I was.It did a number on me and probably my parents wallets to pay for therapy. It got better when I was older because I found out that I wasn’t alone. That is the saving grace. You are not alone! People will always be mean and bully you. People don’t just graduate college and decide to be nice. I wish that were true. But, you can find people just like you to share with and start your life with. I also found solace in theater. My first grade teacher Mrs.Sheridan(God bless her) put me in my first real play and I was hooked. Had I not found that outlet I don’t know where I’d be.

I digress. My blog you’ll have to hear about my problems,I guess.

I think I inhaled too many glue fumes after my arts n’crafts marathon so I decided to wind down with a post.

Halloween.My most favorite of holidays.

Here are some Do’s and Don’ts

Don’t OD on candy,pumpkin ale or spiked apple cider

Do OD on glitter,creativity and confidence

Do use Halloween as an excuse to dress like a total whore and not get judged for it.Why not? Its fun to feel sexy.

Don’t ACT like a total whore. Keep it classy ladies. Just because he can see the goodies doesn’t mean he can have them.

Do make your own costume.So much more interesting than store bought ones(and cheaper too)

Do paint your pregnant belly with a pumpkin or something cutesy.

DON’T POST THAT SHIT ON FACEBOOK! You’re already clogging up my feed with the endless pictures of your baby.Yes, I know I can hide it but there is something fascinating about peering into a life that I don’t have.I don’t want it but its interesting to study from far away.I’m sure you roll your eyes at the endless pictures of me leading my crazy single LA lifestyle.But you know somewhere in between cleaning spit up, and attending another PTA meeting that you yearn to be in LA LA land sipping champagne at some unreasonable hour and scoping out the hotties playing volleyball.

Do Have fun.Act like a kid.Get scared.Indulge your inner horror loving self.Stay in character all night.

Another spoof I did with Lisa Nova and The Station!To prep we all watched The Real housewives reunion special.We then talked about our characters , relationships And storylines. We had a rough outline of what we were going to say( catch phrases) but we improved most of it. We also didnt know what crazy questions Steve would throw at us. We had a hard time keeping a straight face! I had so much fun working with these talented ladies ( oh and Steve )

Rent,The musical…

I saw Rent at The Hollywood Bowl this weekend. I have seen Rent over ten times in New York,Chicago and LA. I am a Renthead, a fanatic and will be til the day I die.
I can tell you the moment I knew that this musical was going to change my life. It sounds corny but I’m a thespian true and true.And the best musicals and plays stay with you forever and affect you far after the curtains close.
I was freshman in college and about to start school in a few days in a new city,far from home. Rent has been out for several years now but this was the first chance I’d gotten to see it.
Neaderlander Theater,New York,NY
August 24,8pm eastern standard time my Dad and I sit three rows from the stage.
A woman who had seen the show tons of times actually switched with me so I could sit in the second row and she took my seat in the third.
I knew I would like the show six chords after “the power blows”
I knew I would love the show when Roger was left alone on stage.
Right before One Song Glory. There was a rich silence. A collective breath of anticipation from the audience and then those chords strummed from Rogers guitar….
I had shivers down my spine.My hair stood on end
“One song,Glory…” I turned around and my Dad grabbed my hand. I knew he was feeling the same way.
It was at that moment that Rent changed me forever.
It reaffirmed to me what great theater could do and why I wanted to do it.
The power to touch people and connect with them. That shared experience with the audience and actors.
I have seen many other shows(and movies) that have the same affect on me.
But,Rent will always hold a very special place in my heart.
Whenever I was feeling overwhelmed I would hop on a train and pay whatever I could afford to see the show. It never failed to inspire me and push me to do better.
I’m thankful that I got to see it this weekend at the Bowl. My inspiration is fully charged again.
